Maccabee Shelley, an artist who works with glass from bottles, creates abstract and incredible sculptures of art. During our mass conversation he explained that with each piece he creates, it teaches him something new; specifically he learns new ways to work with the medium. Meaning that the outcome of his sculptures primarily depends on the technique in which he works with the glass. By the way the glass forms he’ll determine his next move or the next technique he’ll use to create his masterpiece. He also utilizes his subconscious when making his sculptures because of his belief that the intuitive part of our brains are more intelligent than our cognitive part.
Many of the glass bottles he receives comes from the university’s recycle center. When digging through dumpsters and looking through the recycled glass bottles he noted that he is constantly searching and “feeling” the materials around him so that he knows which bottles will allow him to make his best works.
While looking at each piece and listening to his meanings behind them, I was amazed. His work is definitely something new and not like something i’ve seen before. The fact that he really connects to the medium and “listens” to it to create each piece really shows his passion for art. Also, because he subconsciously creates his piece, it’s a true symbol of his mind.
